Discover how the right nutrition can help protect your kidneys, improve your lab results, and give you the confidence to enjoy food again.
If you’ve been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD), you may feel overwhelmed, fearful, and unsure of what to eat. For many people, the advice from doctors and online sources can be confusing…sometimes even contradictory. The good news is that food really does matter, and with the right knowledge, you can take meaningful steps to support your kidney health.
Plant-Powered Kidney Nutrition is your clear, evidence-based guide to understanding how nutrition impacts your kidneys and how to make practical, delicious choices every day. Written by Jen Hernandez, RDN, CSR, LDN, a registered dietitian specializing in kidney nutrition and founder of Plant-Powered Kidneys, this book translates complex science into simple strategies that you can confidently use at the grocery store, in the kitchen, and at the dinner table.
Inside, you’ll find:
-
The essentials of kidney nutrition—made simple. Learn how protein, potassium, sodium, and phosphorus actually affect kidney function, and why balance—not fear—is the key.
-
A stage-based approach. Whether you are in stage 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 (not on dialysis), you’ll find guidance tailored to your needs so you can protect kidney function as long as possible.
-
Practical tools and resources. Meal planning tips, food lists, and portion guides give you the structure you need without the overwhelm.
-
Real-life patient success stories. See how others with CKD have improved their labs, reduced stress, and even regained kidney function by making realistic dietary changes.
-
Recipes and food inspiration. Discover how to enjoy more plant-based meals—without giving up the flavors and traditions you love or spending hours upon hours in the kitchen.
This book goes beyond “eat this, not that.” It shows you how to:
-
Build confidence when talking with your doctor about labs and treatment options
-
Separate fact from fear when it comes to nutrients like potassium and protein
-

If you’re living with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and feel confused about what foods to eat and why, this book is essential! Jen provides clear guidance on how to select foods that can help manage your CKD. After struggling for over a year and investing in other books that only offered recipes without explaining how kidneys filter specific foods, I found Jen’s approach refreshing. She tailors her advice based on the stage of CKD you are experiencing. Within three months of following her dietary guidelines, I was able to improve my renal test results. Jen has made understanding nutrition for kidney health easier than any other “how-to” book I’ve found.

I’ll save you. There are VERY few recipes in here (which is what I was looking for). Overall, the books by Lee Hull are far superior in terms of documentation and science. So very sorry I bought this, not at all what I consider a valuable resource. I’d recommend you take a HARD PASS on purchasing this. If you have chronic kidney disease, much luck, low protein diets are a horror to enact and this is not the book that will make that an easier lift.

I thought this was a book of useful plant based recipes. It is far more a book about kidney function. Only 32 pages out of 254 are recipes. I knew it contained useful information but I thought that would be maybe a quarter of the book. Good information but too much and not what i was looking for.

This is a tremendous resource for anyone with kidney issues. It is very easy to read and clearly explains kidney function, labs and their relevance, and how to use food to manage your disease. I have been following Jen for a few years now and her insight has helped me tremendously in my kidney journey. I plan to gift this book to family and friends with CKD as well as few “healthy” folks who need this knowledge.
Whether you are someone with CKD, AKI or not, this is a significant resource to understand how blood pressure, diabetes, and kidney disease are intertwined.
